I love a notable culinary film moment. Remember the Christmas scene in Little Women (2019), when the March sisters wake up to find a delicious-looking breakfast of eggs, bangers, potatoes, pork belly and poached pears? But then, Marmee, bless her do-gooder soul, makes them pack it up and give it away to the small pox family? And the girls are bummed but they know it’s the right thing to do. But we, the viewers, can almost taste those delicious poached pears being ripped out of our mouths.
Thankfully, we are all rewarded for our kindness, courtesy of ye olde wealthy neighbour, Mr. Laurence. After finding out that the March gang gave away their breakfast, he arranges for an incredible feast to be delivered to them as a surprise. We’re talking multiple cakes, fresh bread, jam, meringue cookies, and maybe a ham, probably some type of jellied meat…who knows. But the crown jewel of the spread is a glorious mountain of pink peppermint ice cream.
Food stylist Christine Tobin sourced, researched, designed, decorated, and prepared all of the period-appropriate food we see in Little Women with painstaking attention to detail. Very impressive! This article does a deep dive on some of Tobin’s processes as she strived to capture the exact vibe of the food in Louisa May Alcott’s book.
Anyway, I love that bowl of pink peppermint ice cream and would really like to try some. I don’t have much more to say about this, I just really want to eat that ice cream.
You can watch Little Women on Netflix in Canada. Enjoy!
